WHAT IS TENS?
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) has been used widely for more than 30 years for pain relief, and more recently, a stimulator designed specifically for labour has been used in maternity hospitals. Using the stimulator during labour has been found to shorten the duration of the first stage of labour by allowing you to stay relaxed in your own familiar surroundings at home for longer. The level of pain of the contractions is also significantly reduced. Recovery after delivery is faster and more importantly it is drug free and therefore has no adverse effects on mother or baby.
